About me
My name is Frida Mälarborn Hoshino and I am a ceramic artist based in Gothenburg Sweden. My works have been exhibited at Galleri Kaolin and Röda Sten, among others, and are represented at the Röhsska Museum and the Swedish Embassy in Rome. In my studio in Majorna, I continue to experiment with the possibilities of clay and create objects that move between applied art and sculpture.

My work
In my investigative work, I explore the movement of clay and its ability to create sculptures through the technique of nerikomi.
This technique, where different layers of colored clay are cut and joined, allows me to explore the unique qualities of clay in relation to both movement and stagnation. The sculptures I create are a reflection of movement – the energy that drives shaping – but also an investigation of the state of clay when movement stops and freezes, and thus becomes unformable. It is in this field of tension between movement and stillness that the transformative properties of clay come to life.
The shaping of clay becomes a metaphor for constant change, where form is never static but always subject to time and process. The clay, from the malleable and mobile, gradually transitions to the hard and solid – a process that simultaneously raises the question of when an object ceases to be a simple material and instead becomes an art object. In this process, I also explore the role of the viewer. In whose eyes does the work become art and when can it be perceived as something else, perhaps even trash? The subjective interpretation is a central part of this work.
